When referring to the region on the map that Dalmasca, the City of Rabanastre and the Lighthouse etc are located, is it still noted as being as "Ivalice" or is that name used for the legend of older civilization that came before?

Ivalice

For clarification, in both settings (FFXIV and FFT/XII) Ivalice was a large geographical region. In FFT/XII it encompassed three continents and several nations. But, asstated by Matsuno-san, the Ivalice in FFXIV’s Hydaelyn is not the same as the one in FFT/XII.

In our setting, Ivalice was an ancient region situated in southern Othard, though we do not know how far it stretched. Both the Royal City of Lesalia and the Clockwork City of Goug (and likely many others if the Durai Papers are to be believed) were situated in ancient Ivalice.

Encyclopedia Eorzea II - Lesalia Garden Ruins: “These ruins of an ancient civilization were discovered deep beneath the earth. Jenomis cen Lexentale, the man who discovered them, insists they are the remnants of legendary Lesalia, the royal capital of Ivalice, but thorough archaeological surveys have yet to be conducted to substantiate his claims.”

Jenomis cen Lexentale: “Yesterday, Ivalice was a legend. Today, it is history. And this is all thanks to your selfless efforts. No longer need I hide my heritage, for you have shown it to be noble.”

Jenomis cen Lexentale: “There is no question that Ivalice once stood atop the lands we now call Dalmasca, but with the passage of time have remnants of those eras past faded beyond recognition. If only the Great Library at Rabanastre still stood…”

Ramza bas Lexentale: “According to my father, Rabanastre was already a thriving city some thousand years ago. But after performing several private excavations beneath the so-called Desert Sapphire, my father came to the conclusion that it was not the first settlement to stand here.”

Lina Mewrilah: “Then… your father believes that Rabanastre sits atop the Royal City of Lesalia, capital of Ivalice! But if that’s true, it could change history!”

Lina Mewrilah: “Lesalia… and now Goug. One would think our discoveries more than sufficient to prove the Lexentales’ claims, at least with regard to Ivalice’s existence.”

As you can see from the cited text, Ivalice exists only in legends in the current day. The region has since been claimed by the Kingdom of Dalmasca and has been known by that name since the Great Flood. We don’t know for certain how long ago Ivalice existed, though we can narrow it down to either the 4th or 5th Astral Era based on what we do know: 1) that it existed after the fall of Allag, and 2) that Dalmasca was built on top of Lesalia at some point during the 5th Astral Era.

Shofie "Smashcat" Mahowyn (39)

A big thank you to this anon, who pointed out that while Jenomis claims Rabanastre was already a bustling city roughly 1000 years ago when the B’nargin line began, Ramza clarifies that the city existed prior to the Great Flood:

Lina Mewrilah: “Whatever led you to believe your father was in Dalmasca’s capital?”
Ramza Lexentale: “My father’s fascination with Ivalician legend began with a trip to the antediluvian city, long before the war. Call it a premonition, but something tells me that is where he has returned. Now you must excuse me. I need some time to think.”

This dates Rabanastre at at least 1600 years old, and makes Ivalice out to most likely be a 5th Astral Era region, though perhaps even older.

Hope this helps, anons! You can read more about Dalmasca in this post!

IVALICE NOTICE

In a futile attempt to head this off before it goes wildly out of hand…

This is not the first time FFXII / Tactics themes, names, places, etc have shown up in FFXIV. Before people go too crazy again, remember no new races are coming in 4.0 launch and that we aren’t actually going to“Ivalice” the world that so many of us, dev team including, have fallen in love with over the years.

“Ivalice” in Hydaelyn is going to very likely just be a place in the world, a region, a city that once was, an ancient civilization. Just like Rabanastre when it was confirmed for being a city in Othard, and when we found out Dalmasca was a city in Ilsabard. Or the various Scions of Light showing up as Ascians. It is almost certainly not us going to another world to see our bunny cousins.

I’m a fan of the Tactics world, and I’m really excited to find out what this new 24-man raid will entail, but…

Fernehalwes: Oh, man. This is not as cool an answer as you’re expecting. Final Fantasy is about borrowing, taking things other Final Fantasies did and adjusting it and making it your own. The fact that the XIV team has a lot of people that worked on XII—our main scenario writer, Maehiro-san, also worked on XII, Minagawa-san, the guy that did all of the UI, also XII, he’s working with us, and also Yoshida-san himself being a fan of Final Fantasy XII—this is one of the games they wanted to borrow heavily from because they thought it was really cool, and they really liked the imagery and lore that it had. So they want to borrow from it, and of course they know Final Fantasy XII has its story, and they don’t want to take that story and put it into XIV, because it’s not XIV, it’s XII, but they want to draw on that imagery and those connections. It’s not random, but it might not be as deep a meaning as you think it is.

A: Now that you mention it, though, when Gaius first lands in Vylbrand, the voiced guy does say Othard. It stuck in my head because in another language he says he’s from Rabanastre.

KF: Guess where Rabanastre iiis! <laughs> There’s also a line in the Japanese version where they name-drop Dalmasss—<throat clearing> It’s not in English, but that’s where it is and maybe someday we’ll be seeing some of <heavy throat clearing>.

Thank you and now lemme get back to my swimming hype and desperately hoping that we get to finally explore the Rothlyt Sound in Stormblood.

A QUICK FOLLOW UP TO MY LAST POST

After posting, I actually took more time to closely look at the promo image of the new raid, Return to Ivalice. I found a clue.

Shofie "Smashcat" Mahowyn (52)

If you look very carefully at the decorative accents that encircle the blade, you’ll notice that in the circular bauble near the base is a symbol. These symbols match the twelve zodiac, which appears in Thavnairian legends of the Zodiac Braves, the atma, and oddly in the naming of the first twelve Gods’ Quiver units.

Shofie "Smashcat" Mahowyn (53)

However, they’re also used in FFXII to represent the Scions of Light and Darkness. If you look closely though, there’s a 13th zodiac sign in the hilt of the sword at the top center.

⛎ is the symbol of Ophiuchus, also known as Serpentarius, the Snake-bearer. In FFXII, the Esper Zodiark embodies the sign of Ophiuchus and was originally known as Serpentarius before War of the Lions.

So, what is our new 24-man likely about? Zodiark and the Ascians.

Now if you all really want some wild speculation based on names… I might have stumbled across this while I was doing more research into the connection between Ophiuchus and Zodiark:

“Unukalhai is a traditional Arabic name for the star commonly known as Alpha Serpentis, which appears in the constellation Serpens. Serpens bisects the constellation Ophiuchus, and is the reason that constellation, the 13th in the Western zodiac, is known as the ‘Serpent Bearer.’"

Astrologian and Role Play: A Guide on How to Incorporate Your Deck of Cards into Divination and Fortunetelling for RP.

Shofie "Smashcat" Mahowyn (82) yourou-ffxiv

Shofie "Smashcat" Mahowyn (83)

Without giving away spoilers of the class quest chain, it’ssafe to say that if one wishes to play an Astrologian in role play (RP) thatthere are a few key things to keep in mind; astrology in FFXIV is more than ascience and study of the stars, it’s a spiritual journey and that spiritualconnection is what allows the caster to manipulate aether into casting spells,as well as working succinctly with one’s deck of cards. The spirituality behindthe magic is interpretive to the player and how they wish to play theircharacter… including the cards, however, has left a few players stumped on howthey can easily incorporate the deck with their role playing.

In a normal deck of tarot cards there are 78 cards andeach card has their own unique meaning. There are 22 Major Arcana and 56 MinorArcana across 4 suits (pentacles, swords, cups, and wands) and each suit refersback to a major element (earth, wind, water, and fire.) However the deck forAstrologians in FFXIV has been condensed to 6 cards with 2 deities per card andeach card in the Major Arcana having an element tied to it.

For explanations of each card from the game + pictures oftheir constellations, visit my previous post (CAUTION, SPOILERS): HERE

When doing tarot readings, depending on the spread that’sdrawn (anything from a basic three card spread to something intricate like theCeltic cross spread) each card that is drawn has been pulled in a specificposition: Divine (upright) or Reverse (upside down). The card takes on adifferent meaning depending on the spread and the position.

For FFXIV working with only six cards limits thecomplexity of a spread, so for the sake of simplicity I’m going to go over the six cards of the Major Arcana and four spreads that can be used in divination.

To continue reading, please click the read more! Just asa forewarning there might be spoilers but I’ll do my best to avoid them ifpossible.
